GlobalFoundries, founded in 2009, is a world leading semiconductor manufacturer offering solutions for automotive, computing, internet of things (IoT) and smart mobile devices applications. GlobalFoundries’ range of technology platforms includes FinFET, RF, CMOS, Silicon photonics, and fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) technology.

GlobalFoundries Manufacturing Services aids fabless customers throughout all stages of chip manufacture, including chip design and wafer fabrication through to final assembly and test. Their collaborative supply chain model utilises both in-house and partner expertise to support customers with turn-key manufacturing services such as package design and operations management.

GlobalFoundries is owned by Mubadala Investment Company and is a member of the International Semiconductor Development Alliance. GlobalFoundries has fabs in Singapore, Germany and two in the United States, in Malta NY, and Essex Junction, VT. In 2023 Onsemi completed its acquisition of GlobalFoundries' 300mm fab in East Fishkill, NY.

Strategy

In early 2025, Global Foundries announced plans to create a new centre for advanced packaging and testing of U.S.-made essential chips within its New York manufacturing facility. This project, supported by investment from the State of New York and the U.S. Department of Commerce, would enable semiconductors to be manufactured, processed, packaged and tested all within the US.

GlobalFoundries is part of The Vermont Tech Hub, alongside the University of Vermont and State of Vermont. The group was awarded 27.3 million dollars at the beginning of 2025 and will create a comprehensive technology ecosystem to drive semiconductor design and manufacturing of high-power and high-frequency gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors. Over the next five years, the hub will train over 500 employees and engage with over 6000 students across Vermont.

GlobalFoundries has a target of improving water use efficiency by achieving a normalized water use of 0.32 liters/Manufacturing Index or less by 2025. GlobalFoundries Fab 1 in Dresden has an ultrapure water recycling plant for treating and returning low-pollution rinse waters back to the UPW makeup plant. In 2022, the company announced that this plant has a 75% recycling rate for UPW.
