Infineon Technologies designs and manufactures semiconductors and system solutions. It operates through four segments: Automotive, Green Industrial Power Control, Power and sensor systems, and Connected Secure Systems. Infineon is a global market leader in automotive semiconductors, achieving a market share of 13.5 percent in the global automotive semiconductor market in 2024.
Strategy
In 2020, Infineon bought Cypress Semiconductor, a Californian chip manufacturer, and in 2023 it acquired GaN systems who house a broad portfolio of gallium nitride-based power conversion solutions.
In 2024, Infineon opened a 200-mm silicon carbide power fab which includes gallium nitride epitaxy capabilities in Kulim, Malaysia. The first phase of investment amounted to 2 billion euros, with further investment in phase 2 potentially adding up to 5 billion euros.
Infineon also expanded its silicon carbide and gallium nitride manufacturing capacity in Villach, Austria in 2023. It also announced in 2023 that it is investing 5 billion in a 300mm semiconductor manufacturing plant in Dresden, Germany, to produce analog/mixed-signal technologies and power semiconductors. Construction began in 2023 and production is scheduled to begin in 2026.
In 2025, the company also began construction on a new backend fab in Samut Prakan, south of Bangkok, Thailand, which is expected to begin operations in 2026 and supports Infineon’s plan to diversify their manufacturing footprint.
In 2025, the company has also entered into an agreement for the acquisition of Marvell Technology’s Automotive Ethernet business, priced at US$2.5 billion, a move that supports the continued expansion of Infineon’s microcontroller business following its rise to global market leader.
