The integration of Reverse Osmosis (RO) (RO) desalination systems into the Navy in the late 1980s became the standard method for freshwater production onboard vessels. This article reviews microfiltration (MF), a pretreatment technology proposed to improve the performance of RO systems and counteract the challenge of operating in poor quality water with reference to shipboard RO pretreatment.
