Ultrashort-chain PFAS such as TFA and TFMS are highly soluble and difficult to adsorb or destroy with conventional approaches. This presentation introduces hydrothermal alkaline treatment (HALT), which uses subcritical water and high pH to achieve more than 99% PFAS destruction with complete conversion to fluoride. It covers degradation mechanisms for carboxylic and sulfonic PFAS, case studies destroying TFA in complex industrial matrices, bench and pilot work with 3M, and a life cycle assessment showing about 90% lower carbon emissions than off-site incineration.
