With the commercialisation of electrodeionization (EDI) in the 1980s as a reliable technology for the production of high-purity water, a reduction or elimination of on-site acid and caustic storage and waste neutralization resulted. This is due to EDI not requiring chemicals for regeneration in contrast to conventional Ion Exchange (IX) methods. This article reviews the EDI process, discussing specific steps resulting in the production of high-purity water.
