The semiconductor industry is at a pivotal point, undergoing a dynamic transformation with in itself.

It is balancing short-term uncertainty with the inevitable – an unprecedented acceleration in both complexity and magnitude as it powers the AI revolution, as well as advances in 5G and quantum computing.

Semiconductor manufacturing sets the pace of all industries, leading the way in speed, scale and engineering precision. Decades of fab innovation has led to the most sophisticated facilities systems in existence, with the most complex challenges for water, power, cooling, chemicals and gases. Data centers – the other key infrastructure of the new economy – look to the semiconductor world to deliver quicker, better and more sustainably.

The New Era requires pushing past short-term market uncertainty, adopting operational agility, and radically evolving to meet global technology demands. The UltraFacility 2025 Annual Conference will explore the theme of resilience through forward-looking transformation, exploring technical solutions for advanced manufacturing facilities, and sharing those in cross-sector collaboration to deliver on the AI revolution.

An end-user perspective on the theme

Approaching this inflection point, the industry must innovate to be prepared and continue to be ahead of the game.

A leader at a major semiconductor manufacturer told UltraFacility that this theme “really depicts the current disposition of the market and how resilience means that we must work in the present and be tactical in preparation for the strategic transformation.”

He added that the next-generation technology is ‘still developing and emerging towards a mass production state’ and as such the industry must ‘prepare with a commitment to readiness across the industry through collaboration across supply chain, infrastructure, business systems and manufacturing’.

Sustainability – not just encompassing environmental responsibility, but also reliability, efficiency and adaptability – should not be forgotten as priority, as co-located data centers and semiconductor fabs compete for resources. He added: “We must also not forget continuous improvements in sustainability and robustness of the manufacturing that is vital in supporting the new age of semiconductor.

What are the solutions for redefining resilience?

The core enablers of resilient growth lie in collaboration, rapid innovation, quicker responses and investment in the digital transformation.

  • Climate and infrastructure resilience: Mega-fabs demand huge quantities of water and stable energy supply. Many are sited near data centers, intensifying the need for resilient infrastructure. What new, innovative technological solutions will help manufacturers ensure water security, conserve energy, and manufacture sustainably?
  • Supply chain resilience: As supply chains evolve and localize, including for high purity materials, risks and opportunities emerge. Competition for materials with other industries thriving in the new technological age also intensifies the challenge. How can digital tools and deeper collaboration enhance robustness and agility in the supply chain?
  • Workforce resilience: With more than 80 new fabs planned globally by 2030, and rising competition with other growing industries for talent, how can we staff all facilities? What role can digital training and automation play in accelerating readiness and enhancing workforce efficiency?
  • Operational Excellence: The complexity of new factories is immense. How can semiconductor pave the way for other industries in innovating digital tools and quicker technology implementation?
  • Sustained growth: How can the industry innovate new approaches to respond more quickly to challenges, increase construction productivity, and consume the peaks in demand?

The commitment to sharing cutting-edge ideas in facility operations and innovation is the driving force for the UltraFacility Conference. Short term challenges are enormous - but so is the global potential for the industry, and the game-changing technologies it enables. Connect, collaborate, and drive progress with engineers and end users this year at UltraFacility 2025, Austin TX, 3 - 5 December.
